A Brazilian couple has given their twenty years to regrow the trees in the forest. Our mother Earth is losing around 18 million of forests every year. The birds and animals have left their shelters forcefully due to deforestation. Some people are trying their best to plant more trees after being cut. But planting 2-3 trees won’t be enough.
Sebastião and Lélia Salgado have done the unthinkable. They have turned a remote land into a forest. By saving thousands of species, they have become an inspiration for us. They took this challenge head-on and gave their 20 years to recreate a home for animal and bird species. They have proven us that anyone can create an impact and turn any barren landscape into a beautiful forest.
How did the Brazilian couple manage to achieve success?
Dedication is the key. If you are focused on your work, then it can do wonders. Everything started with a vision in 1994. Brazilian photojournalist Sebastião Salgado wanted to lead a peaceful life after returning from East Africa. He had documented the brutal mass slaughter also known as the Rwanda genocide. He had a very traumatic experience. So one day, the couple decided to turn their native land into a forest. It is located in the Minas Gerais area of Brazil.
They realized that the forest had lost its greenery. Lélia gave an idea to Sebastiao to restore the land. They took help from the others to transform the 1,754 acres of land into a forest. They also hired 24 people to grow trees faster. Sebastião also did a smart job by creating a group of partners and volunteers to get funds. The couple also built environmental organization named the Instituto Terra.
Finally, their hard work paid off, and the desolated land turned into a Paradise. Today, the forest has become a home to 172 birds species, 15 species of amphibians and reptiles and 33 types of mammals. This has proven to be one of the biggest accomplishments of mankind.
