CW boss Mark Pedowitz revealed that it were indeed Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki behind the decision to end the long running series. Ackles and Padalecki wanted Supernatural season 15 to be the last installment of the series and Ackles announced that in March.
Supernatural season 15 to end the Sci-fi series
Pedowitz talked about why he took one of the most important decisions of his life at the 2019 Television Critics’ Association Press tour. He revealed that the decision to end of the long sci-fi series after 15 seasons was a very tough one.

He revealed he had a “very, very long, sad, heartbreaking discussion” with Ackles, Padalecki and Warner Bros. President Peter Roth.
“We all came to understand what the guys wanted to do,” an emotional Pedowitz said.
The reason for Supernatural season 15 to be the last was that Jensen Ackles wanted to bade goodbye when his favorite series was still relevant.
Pedowitz also added that with Supernatural season 15 the last installment, Ackles, Padalecki and others would get to spend more time with their families.
This would also mean as the long time association ends with Supernatural 15, they would be able to see “what else was out in the world”.
Supernatural spin-off might not become a reality
Pedowitz chose to sideline the idea. Although he was a part of two spin-offs in the past, none of them were related to Supernatural. With Supernatural season 15 ending the series, there’s much talk around fans of a possible spin-off future.
But just like they would be in Supernatural 15, its Jared and Jensen that are the heart of Supernatural. So, Pedowitz scrapped the idea of a possible spin-off.
“I’ve been involved in two spin-offs that did not connect. We have had no further discussions with [Supernatural EP]Bobby Singer. We have had no further discussions whatsoever in terms of Supernatural spin-offs. I tend to believe, at this point, [that] the show’s essence and blood is Jared and Jensen.”
