Fans have been pouring requests for the production of “Alita: Battle Angel 2”. An online petition has managed to garner a whopping 150,000 signatures. However, Disney has maintained silence on the subject.
“Alita: Battle Angel 2” – 150,000 fans await the sequel
“Alita: Battle Angel” was a movie inspired from the Yukito Kishiro’s 1990s Japanese manga series “Gunnm”. The movie was produced last year by James Cameron with Robert Rodriguez as the director. With Rosa Salazar as the protagonist, the movie was able to form a large fan community, who like to call themselves the Alita Army. Alita Army has been making persistent attempts to get Disney to make a sequel.
The Change.org petition which was put up briefly following the premiere of the first movie has so far received over 150,500 signatures.

“Alita: Battle Angel 2” – Disney’s intentions towards the franchise
Considering the first movie premiered one year ago, the large fanbase that the movie has gathered is impressive. On second thought, Alita Army’s support might not mean as much to Disney in comparison to ticket sales of the movie last year.

The movie brought in more than $400 million for Disney, but the figure is not significant considering the production budget amounted to $170 million. Since profits drive the movie industry, as much as it does others, the chances of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” being produced are quite slim.
Further, the movie franchise now has been conferred a seat on the star-studded bench of IPs following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. 20th Century Fox was the global distributor for the first movie. Even if Disney were to momentarily look away from the box office performance of the first movie, “Alita: Battle Angel 2” will show up well below other movies on Disney’s priority list.
