The Spanish giants Barcelona have recently acquired services of french winger Antoine Griezmann. The transfer that cost then €108m has increased their spending to €1.08bn in the last 5 years.
Barcelona’s astonishing spending though has finally costed them a loan. They had to take a €31.5m to complete Griezmann’s £108m transfer from Atletico Madrid.
How did they spend €1.08 bn ?
Barcelona recently acquired services of Anotine Griezmann. But before that they spent on many big money transfers like Samuel Umtiti, Ousmane Dambele and Coutinho, the last two worth over €100m. They also acquired Luis Suarez from Manchester City at €60m in 2015.

Neymar’s transfer in 2017 to PSG did bring them back €222m. But still the money they have spent doesn’t get recovered that easily.
It has now started to hurt them and they must be feeling the heat of a loan finally taken. Neymar was also willing to come back to Barca but their depleted stocks might not allow them to buy him now. Although it’s still possible to buy him in exchange of players. They are looking to send Coutinho or Umtiti to PSG. Liverpool have also offered to buy Coutinho back albeit a loan deal initially.
Barcelona still ready to renovate home ground
The Catalans also bought Frenkie De Jong at €75m this season. The club’s president Josep Maria Bartomeu said at Griezmann’s presentation, via the Daily Mail: “The club has taken out a six-month unsecured loan for €35m (£31.5m) and the remaining €85m [is covered by] anticipating payments yet to be received.”
After all the money spent, Barca is still not shying away from necessary expenses. They have recently agreed to renovate Camp Nou for a whopping €600m.
That’s a fearless move from the Spanish Giants but they will have to check on their accounts to avoid any distractions going into next season. They also might think they have found enough to lay out a solid team come next season and they can still do enough without Neymar.
