A deadly fungus called “Candida Auris” is spreading in numerous healthcare centres. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this fungus has become a threat for humans globally. Doctors are unable to find a cure for it because it is drug resistant.
How is the Candida Auris fungus affecting people?
People who have weaker immune systems or are prone to catch sickness easily are the main victims of this fungus. Candida auris mostly infects their bloodstreams. Our technology has become extremely advanced, but still, the scientists are facing a huge difficulty to identify the deadly fungus.
Who is at a risk?
The individual from infants to elderly who have recently visited nursing homes and have been using feeding tubes, breathing tubes and central venous catheters are at a huge risk of catching Candida Auris infection. The CDC also stated that the fungus should be contained before it begins to spread in healthcare centres.
More than 587 people have the infection and are being taken to hospitals in cities like Chicago, New Jersey, and New York City. As per the sources, the fungus was first discovered in Japan in 2009. Later on, it was found in the U.S. in 2016. It has in more than 20 countries.
Dr Todd Ellerin who is Infectious disease specialist stated on ABC News that this fungus is unaffected by the standard cleaning agents which are used by many the health care centre and hospital.
He also stated that if people don’t change the method of cleaning their rooms, then the Candida Auris will reside there. It will infect any individual who steps inside the room. It seems like the fungus is present in the air or on the floor.
