VAR decisions hurt Brazil as Venezuela holds them to draw

Brazil suffered 3 of their goals cancelled through VAR as they finished an underwhelming 0-0 against Venezuela on Tuesday. The Group A Copa America match was a chance for Brazil top group table in front of home fans. The fans though were left disappointed.

VAR decisions turn Brazil’s foe

As many as an astounding 3 decisions were overturned against Brazil and Venezuela got the benefit. The fans, as well as the players, were frustrated after their goals being cancelled just when celebrations began.

The first one was from Roberto Firmino was denied a goal after he was fouled after netting one late in the first half. Next up was Gabriel Jesus’s effort right at the hour mark. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) deemed him being offside just before the shot. Brazil effort got wasted against Venezuela for the first attempt.

Philippe Coutinho once again found the net but VAR again denied the could-be winner.

The draw has left Brazil stranded at the top sharing the spot with Peru. While Brazil had a frustrating day, Peru defeated Bolivia 3-1 to reach atop. VAR is not on the side of Brazil but Venezuela.

Next up will be a table-topping decider between Brazil and Peru on Saturday. Both the sides though just need a draw to go through the quarterfinals so expect them to play safer.

Venezuela is sitting at third above Bolivia who is yet to open its account. The two sides will meet on Saturday with Bolivia playing for pride.

We can play better than that regardless of Neymar’s status

A lot of criticism for Brazil was about their over-dependence on star Neymar. Brazil coach Tite accepted the big hole without Neymar but was quick to note they played below their potential.

“We were not as creative as we wanted to. When we don’t score, we get nervous. You kind of rush the vertical pass,” Tite said after the match. “We need to finish better.

“Neymar would be missed by every team in the world. I want him to get better. We can play better than that regardless of Neymar’s status.

Coach though shied away from saying anything against the technology. “I don’t have anything to complain (regarding VAR),” he said.
